Let me guess you just started repairing mobile and you want to know how to change charging connector the right way I got it right?
Well, my name is Renan and today I’m going to talk a little about how to change mobile charging connector step by step and what are the mistakes you shouldn’t make.
I know you must be extremely anxious for the steps so I won’t beat around the bush and go straight to the first step.
1- Remove All Peripherals

Without a doubt, the first step in learning how to change a charging connector is to remove all peripherals from the board.
If you are just starting out in mobile repair, it is normal for you to be confused by all these weird names.
But calm down, the peripherals in this case are all the parts that you can remove from the board, such as cameras, speakers, flex connections, among others.
So pay close attention to all the peripherals on the board and remove each one of them keeping them organised to replace after the repair.
2- Insulate the Board

One of the main mistakes of those who are just starting out is not knowing how to isolate the board when changing the charging connector.
I know that talking like this may not seem important, but when it comes to knowing how to change a charging connector, we are talking about temperatures above 300 degrees.
And at these temperatures all the components of the board enter the state of fusion and are practically loose and if they are not isolated and protected they can end up coming off the board.
Not to mention the fact that to change the charging connector it is necessary to use inputs such as solder paste that is usually in its liquid state and can enter the microphone and end up burning.
So that you have a guide to follow, I will tell you now the critical points of the board.
These points must be previously isolated before any repairs using temperature.
Critical Points of the Plate
Calm down, I know I said they are critical points but don’t take them so seriously.
What I mean by critical points is that they are components that damage extremely easily.
And you probably don’t want to damage a component during a repair.
1- Microphone

The first critical component we have when changing the charging connector is the microphone.
This is because, as we can see in the image above, the microphone usually has a hole.
This hole is the audio input of the microphone and is extremely delicate.
Therefore, if a high temperature is applied to the microphone or some liquid falls into this hole, it can burn.
2- Plastic Parts

I couldn’t talk about critical points when learning how to change charging connectors and leave plastic parts aside.
As I said before, at the moment we are changing the charging connector, we apply a temperature of more than 300 degrees to the board.
This temperature will melt a piece of plastic in a matter of seconds.
That is why it is extremely important that to make any repairs before you also isolate the plastic parts of the board.
Remembering that the main ones are:
- Charging Connectors
- Display Connector
- Sensors
- Chip and Memory Card Readers
- Vibration Motors

3- Add Solder Paste and New Solder

If you’re wondering how to change mobile charging connectors, you probably already know the tools for working with soldering boards.

Therefore, among the tools for working with soldering on boards are solder paste and tin.
So to be able to change the charging connector you will need to add solder paste to the connector and then solder it again.
The new solder is used to mix with the old solder and make it enter the fusion state faster so the connector comes out easier.
4- Heat the Connector and Remove

Now you are practically 50% of the process of how to change charging connector completed, the next step is to warm up the board and remove the charging connector.
Remembering that in theory this may seem very easy, but this is exactly where at least 80% of beginners fail and cannot understand why.
However, it is simpler than it seems and often this difficulty is just a lack of practice, patience or even lack of attention.
So now I’m going to help you succeed with a few easy steps.
1- Regulate the Temperature
Regulating the temperature of your blower is an extremely important point for you to be successful and actually able to change the charging connector.
The recommended temperature to change a charging connector is 390 degrees and the air outlet between 7 and 8.

2- Control Plate Distance
It is always important to remember that we are working with extremely high temperatures, so the distance your blower is from the plate is important for a successful change or not.
I’ve had some students tell me they didn’t know how to change the charging connector and in fact the only mistake was in the distance between the blower and the board.
It sounds complicated but it’s very simple, in short it works like this:
If the blower is too far from the board, the heat will not reach and will not be enough to remove the charging connector.
However, if the blower is too close, you may end up charring or burning the board to a level that generates a defect.
That is why it is recommended to keep the blower one finger away from the plate, approximately 3cm away.
3- Make Circular Motions on Top of the Connector.
Well, now we’ve gone through all the initial steps and it’s time to move on to the more practical part, which is to remove the connector from the board.
And for this you will focus your air blower on the charging connector and all the time you will make circular movements with the heat concentrated on the connector.
Remember not to leave your hand idle, all the time your blower must be in motion.
Keeping this sequence between 40 seconds and 1 minute and 20 seconds the connector will detach from the board and you will be able to remove it.
5- Prepare the Location

Now that you have removed the charging connector, the next step will be to prepare the board to receive the new charging connector.
For this you will use isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab or brush.
Add alcohol to the brush or cotton swab and use it to clean the place removing solder paste, oxidation, dust or any other type of dirt that may interfere with the application of the connector.
Remembering to always be very careful that alcohol does not enter the microphone hole, otherwise in addition to changing the connector you may also need to change the microphone and that’s not what we want.
After you finish cleaning, you should add solder paste to the connector solder points on the board.
6- Prepare the New Connector

Now we can say that you practically already know how to change charging connectors since we have just reached the final stage of the repair.
Now you will need a charging connector so that it makes contact with the board and does not have failures or load drops.
For this you should use the soldering iron with a little tin to tin the tracks on the back of the connector as in the photo above.
Remembering that for the solder to stick more easily, it is recommended to use solder paste and it is important that you pay close attention to the difference.
At the beginning to remove the connector I said that you would need to use sole paste, now I’m saying that you will need to use paste for soldering.
Yes, that’s right, in this case they are different folders.
After leaving the connector tracks completely covered in tin and turning a silver colour, it was time to take the last step.
7- Apply the Connector

The time has finally come to apply the connector to the board and this is the final phase of how to change the charging connector, but it does not mean that it is the easiest.
Therefore, to be able to complete the repair, you must position the charging connector in place, remembering to centre with the holes in the board.
Ah… Of course, at this point the pads (holes) on the board will not be open, but you should still position the connector.
After that you will use your blower again at 390 degrees and air outlet between 7 and 8, and as before you will make the same movement you did to remove the connector from the board.
The purpose of this warm-up is to make the solder of the board enter the state of fusion and using tweezers you will fit the connector into the pads (holes) that hold the charging connector.
After you finish fitting the connector, you should hold it in place by applying light pressure until the solder cools down completely (Around 5 seconds).
Okay, you’ve just learned step by step how to change mobile charging connector the right way without damaging the board or causing a defect in any component or peripheral.
Final Tips on How to Change Charging Connector
I know that if you’ve come this far, it’s because you’re either trying to learn how to change a mobile charging connector or you’ve tried and failed..
That’s why I need to give you some tips and warnings so that you don’t give up and can succeed.
The first is that learning how to change a charging connector is not as easy as it seems.
That’s why it’s normal that your first, second and maybe even third attempt doesn’t go as well as planned.
In this case, my recommendation is that you don’t give up and keep analysing to know where you are going wrong.
And after that you must repeat the process correcting the flaws.
Remembering that the hardest part is usually getting the connector loose.
That’s why you should pay close attention to this part.
Remember the sequence does not change:
- Solder Paste
- New Solder
- Heat at 390 Degrees and Air Outlet Between 7 and 8
